Pardon the Interruption

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

If you came around looking for the site last night, it may have disappeared on you. It didn’t really, I just moved everything over to a new server, and as always, it took a little while for everyone’s ISP to get the information on where the new site is. :)

Anyway, the reason for the move was to get into the latest version of MySQL database, and finally get rid of all the old Movable Type stuff that was left behind when I moved to WordPress a while back. Seems someone was able to get into those old Movable Type archives and insert links to various spammy sites on the pages. So, I took all that stuff out, and just loaded back up copies of the old static pages so that if there are links out there to those posts, they still take you to that post, even though it’s not tied to a database or connected to the WordPress stuff at all any more.

I’m looking forward to doing some new things behind the scenes with MySQL 5, and you may see some of the results of that out here on the site, such as the list of related posts on each entry.

Let me know if something’s not working correctly with the new server. So far, it looks good to me, but you can never be too sure!

Upgrading

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

I’m in the midst of upgrading both of the blogs here to the latest version of WordPress. Seems like everything is working, but if you find a problem around here, hit the email link above and let me know about it!

Here’s to hoping I finally see the light at the end of the tunnel and can get back to doing some regular posting around here again!

Note About Comments

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

Someone left a couple of comments on the site last night, anonymously, and then sent me an email using the email form anonymously as well, requesting that I remove the comments they had made, as they were embarrassed by having made them public. I agreed to honor that request, feeling that any comments made here belong to the person who made them.

I also deleted the comment I left in reply, as it no longer makes any sense, but without any contact information for the commenter, I wanted to copy my reply here, so they, and anyone else struggling with being a survivor, could see it:

My normal advice to any survivor that leaves messages here is usually to do whatever you have to do to take care of yourself first. I don’t know enough about your situation to say more than that, but I’ve found it to be the most effective thing for us to focus on. That may mean getting away from your family, it may not. In either case, feel free to join the social network I put together for abuse survivors at http://childabusesurvivor.ning.com/

Perhaps just reading the other stories will help you see that there is a place for every survivor, but sometimes it can take time to find it!

Sorry for the Technical Difficulties

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

It was brought to my attention this afternoon that all of the posts on this blog seemed to have been taken down. I assure you, I did not remove them. A corrupted plugin managed to temporarily do that for me. All seems to be well in the world for now, aside from finding a way to get that plugin to work again. :)

Hopefully, I’ll have it fixed sometime soon, but the site should be operational for now!

Thanks!

April’s Carnival Against Child Abuse

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Yes, it’s time to start thinking about what you want to submit to the April carnival. As this month’s host, I’m adding a theme for the month. In addition to the regular themes of Advocacy and Awareness, Aftermath, Healing and Therapy, In the News, Poetry and Survivor Stories, in honor of the month of April, I’d like to focus this carnival on the theme of rebirth/renewal. Whether you choose to view that as the renewal of nature that comes from Springtime, through the religious point of view of Easter, or as simply as a chance for Spring cleaning, if you are thinking of renewal as a Survivor this Spring, please take the time to submit a blog post to this edition of the carnival.

I’ve scheduled the carnival to be published on Friday, April 17th, so you’ve got until midnight EDT on Weds. the 15th (Tax Day in the US!) to submit your article. But don’t wait for the last minute, if you’ve got a good post to submit, do it any time!

Where Have I Been?

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

I realized the other day that this blog has been pretty quiet recently. I’ve been posting stuff to my other blog, the reviews blog has kept up a steady pace of stuff, but this blog has been a little slow. Given that, I thought it’d be a good time to let you know how things have been going over on the Survivor Network site, since that is part of the reason why things have quieted around here!

In a nutshell, that group has had pretty good growth for something that’s only existed for a few months! There are currently 161 members, and there have been a number of really good discussions, ranging from new member introductions to questions about parenting and blog posts with survivor stories and insights about self injury and many, many more!

There’s also 4 sub groups now, and I’m planning on doing some experimenting with the new chat feature that Ning has implemented. There’s been so much going on over there, I can barely keep up with it all!

Overall, the response has been awesome, the group has been so supportive of each other, and of me as I try and work behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly. There have been a few growing pains, but it’s all been well worth it so far. I hope that all of you, whether you are Survivors, or a survivor’s supporter (we have a few of those over there as well), will consider joining, taking a look around, and jumping in with your own contributions!

Upgrading WordPress to 2.7.1

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

I think, after a few hiccups, that I’ve got both WordPress installs on the site upgraded to the latest versions. I’m actually posting this mostly to make sure it works, but also to ask that anyone who finds something that doesn’t work, to please hit the email link and let me know!

Thanks!

Using Twitter

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

I decided, on the advice of a commentor on my other blog, to create a Twitter ID specifically for the Child Abuse Survivor Network. I’m planning on using it to spread news about what’s going on in the network, rhereby reminding folks to come back, on check it out for the first time. It’ll also be a way for me to answer questions about the network for folks who are curious but haven’t signed up for it yet. If you use Twitter and won’t to follow, you can find it @SurvivorNetwork.

Off to a Good Start

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

The Child Abuse Social Network is off to a pretty decent start, some 20 members and some good conversations. I have noticed though, that a number of folks are getting to the front page, prompted to create a profile and leaving. I know that requiring you to join the network before you can read anything on it may be discouraging some folks from signing up, but it was a choice I had to make to try and keep it as safe a place for survivors as I could make it.

So, if you’re curious about what’s there and want to see if it’s relevant to you, go ahead and sign up. If there are no conversations going on currently that you feel strongly about, or groups that fit your specific interest, start your own! It’s your network!

Secondly, since it is private, it’s going to be pretty difficult for people to search Google or other tools and stumble on to it. Everyone who finds this is going to find it as a result of reading about it on a blog, or because someone told them about it. Please, spread the word! The more the merrier. :)
