There’s been a lot of bad news that has a lot of our attention, so I was curious to read this article:<\/p>\n

66 Good News Stories You Didn’t Hear About in 2023<\/a><\/p>\n

Reading it was a nice reminder of the positive things happening around the world regarding green energy, health issues, etc. On the other hand, a few made me stop and angered me a bit because they are true, yet so many people don’t see it, or because the good story could be better if only we’d learn from it.<\/p>\n

Case in point: story 33.<\/p>\n

33. Crime plummeted in the United States<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/blockquote>\n

You would not know that from watching the news or looking at social media in the US. There are so many people in positions of power who want us to be afraid that they will highlight individual acts of crime over and over again without once mentioning how, overall, the violent crime rate is dropping.<\/p>\n

Or how about story 44:<\/p>\n

44. The United States pulled off an economic miracle<\/strong><\/h5>\n

In 2022 economists predicted\u00a0with 100% certainty\u00a0that the US was\u00a0going to enter a recession\u00a0within a year. It\u00a0didn’t happen.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There are still issues in our economy, but it’s not the dumpster fire many keep telling us it is. We have work to do on wage gaps and cost of living issues, but we are not in a recession and don’t appear to be headed into one.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the US did not share in some other global good news, such as increasing rights for women and LGTBQ people in stories 36, 37, 41, and 42. and for this blog’s focus, the fact that suicide rates are down across the globe.<\/p>\n

30. Suicide rates are falling<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Over the past three decades, global suicide rates have fallen by more than a third, thanks primarily to rising living standards in the two most populous countries in the world. In this century, suicide rates have fallen by a third in India and by more than half in China, where one of the most common means of suicide is pesticides. Banning or limiting access to dangerous pesticides has had some astonishing effects in other countries. In 1995, Sri Lanka had the highest suicide rate in the world. That year, it banned dangerous pesticides, and the national suicide rate has since fallen by 70%. In Bangladesh, a similar ban led to a 65% reduction.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The effective measure these countries took was limiting or banning pesticides that were easily accessible to everyone and highly effective at killing people who tried to take their own lives. The US suicide rate went up. Most people in the US who die by suicide do so by using a gun<\/a>. I’ll leave that there for you to consider.<\/p>\n

Those issues aside, the list is a reminder that for all the negative talk, many good things are still happening in the world. I know I appreciated the reminder.<\/p>\n
