You would help, of course. And generally, you\u2019d know what to do. If you saw blood, you\u2019d try to stop it. If the person was choking, you\u2019d open their airway. You wouldn\u2019t be performing surgery if that was required, but you could call a doctor or drive them to a hospital or go to a pharmacy and get painkillers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>But with mental health, the picture is so different. We don\u2019t do any of the above. We generally ignore the symptoms, often only seeing them in hindsight. Then we say, \u201cCheer up!\u201d \u201cThings aren\u2019t that bad!\u201d \u201cLook on the bright side!\u201d In the same way that these phrases will not cure a burst appendix, they can\u2019t cure a bout of depression either.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Would you know what to look for? Would you know what to do?
