{"id":6600,"date":"2018-07-11T08:56:02","date_gmt":"2018-07-11T15:56:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.childabusesurvivor.net\/reviews\/?p=6600"},"modified":"2018-07-10T15:01:05","modified_gmt":"2018-07-10T22:01:05","slug":"reviews-elsewhere-a-twofer-on-mental-health-treatment-then-and-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.childabusesurvivor.net\/reviews\/2018\/07\/11\/reviews-elsewhere-a-twofer-on-mental-health-treatment-then-and-now\/","title":{"rendered":"Reviews Elsewhere &#8211; A Twofer on Mental Health Treatment Then and Now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m always on the lookout for reviews of books and resources that cover abuse and\/or mental health issues, so I couldn&#8217;t resist an article from the New York Post recently &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2018\/07\/07\/the-shocking-truth-about-americas-mental-health-crisis\/\">The shocking truth about America\u2019s mental health crisis<\/a><\/p>\n<p>From that article we get reviews of two different books:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Damnation-Island-Poor-Criminal-19th-Century\/dp\/1616205768\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1530907993&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=Damnation+Island&amp;tag=nypost-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Damnation Island<\/a>,\u201d a new history of the 2-mile strip in the East River that housed the city\u2019s women\u2019s \u201clunatic asylum,\u201d Stacy Horn details the daily atrocities visited on its charges. Nurses beating patients to death, six women trapped in cells meant for one, a pregnant woman confined to a straitjacket while giving birth, hundreds of patients \u2014 some with open syphilitic sores \u2014 made to bathe in the same bathwater. All of this meted out to punish or \u201ctreat\u201d people with mental illness.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Reading \u201cDamnation Island,\u201d you may be lulled into thinking that we\u2019ve come a long way since that real life, 19th century horror show. We don\u2019t even call it Blackwell\u2019s Island anymore \u2014 it\u2019s now called Roosevelt Island, and luxury apartment buildings stand where the asylum once loomed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>But, in reality, we haven\u2019t come that far at all.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>To understand how little has changed, it\u2019s best to turn to another recent release, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Insane-Americas-Criminal-Treatment-Illness\/dp\/0465094198\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1530907961&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=Insane%3A+America%E2%80%99s+Criminal+Treatment+of+Mental+Illness&amp;tag=nypost-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Insane: America\u2019s Criminal Treatment of Mental Illness<\/a>\u201d by journalist Alisa Roth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;ll let you go read the rest, but suffice it to say, what we did then didn&#8217;t work, but what we do now by having so many mental health patients in prison, also doesn&#8217;t work.<span hidden class=\"__iawmlf-post-loop-links\"
