Good for them for trying to make a positive difference in place of the mess that many social networks become for teens. Personally, I find Tumblr to be a scary place when you consider the idea of suicide contagion, and how having that much discussion about suicide on a day to day basis might be impacting young people.
Not every tip you read will be appropriate for every person. People with anxiety are different than people dealing with depression, are different that people dealing with Bipolar are different than people dealing with a myriad of other issues, and even within all people with anxiety, they are all individuals. There is no one-size-fits-all advice here, other than to open the lines of communication, and ask how you can be a good friend.
In the end, isn’t that what being a good friend to anyone is? Trying to understand how you can be helpful and supportive in their life? It’s no different here.
But, these are a good place to start.
I think back to my childhood and the sexual and physical violence I was subjected to. I struggle with anxiety because my brain is always going back to that time – a time when I was not safe! The things my brain learned then weren’t a failure of mental health; they were survival instincts. They were healthy reactions to an unsafe environment. My current challenge is unlearning them now that I am no longer in that unsafe environment. Asking me to do that while I was unsafe would have been dumb. The anxiety was trying to keep me alive.
What I really enjoyed about the list of things Anya uses to support her own well-being is that some of them are simple activities, yoga, reading, knitting, etc.
Many of us think of our support network when it comes to addiction, mental health, healing trauma, etc., in terms of the people around us. That’s an important part of it, yes, but there are also the things we do to support ourselves. Those are important too.
My list of support activities doesn’t look at all like Anya’s, but it’s there. Getting out and taking photos, learning new technologies, writing, listening to podcasts, etc. Those things keep me connected and involved with the things that interest me, and they are an important part of taking care of my mental health.
This is such an important concept for survivors to understand, because we deal with so much shame around this idea: Do you think we live in a fair world where good things happen to good people and bad things only happen to bad people? Whether you believe this on a conscious level or not, chances…
Is technology a panacea for everything that’s wrong with mental health care in the US? No. Are they always the appropriate solution? No. But do we need to find some way for technology to step in a fill this gaps when the need has been going unmet like this for so long?

Sixty percent of young people with major depression received no mental health treatment in 2017-2018, and one quarter of adults with mental illness reported an unmet need for treatment. In the U.S., 55% of counties have no psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker, and 70% don’t have a single child psychiatrist.
