When we fail to protect people from predators

The curious thing about this story is how many news outlets describe the murder of Sara Gilson as a response to her claiming her husband was a pedophile, when in fact she only found out when he was caught making out with a player on the team he coached, and that girl’s mother filed charges.

In fact, both women had filed protective orders against him, and she took to social media to simply share the fact that he had been charged.

On the other hand, all of these charges happened in June, and he was still walking around free to murder her.

And we wonder why abuse victims, and people who might suspect abuse, don’t come forward.

@theparanormalfiles This story is absolutely shocking and incredibly horrific. My thoughts go out to Sara’s family. #truecrime #crime #truecrimetok #truecrimetiktok #netflix ? Urban legends, conspiracy theories, talk that incites fear and anxiety(1482511) – DELTA2 TRAKCS

At the end of the day, if we can’t keep the separated spouse of a person under investigation for sexually assaulting and grooming an underage girl safe, what chance do most victims have?

And, maybe more importantly, why should anyone trust any adult with their kids, or themselves? There’s no one coming to save you if things turn violent. Our system is woefully incompetent at that.

I was going to leave a comment on Tamara’s post, Who Am I without the Abuse?, but the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to turn it into a post instead of taking over her comments with my thoughts. This subject was weird for me. I’m pretty sure I’ve written about this…

  • Sex Abuse in Sports

This is an important story. It tells the story of a young girl and how she wound up a victim of sexual abuse at the hands of her gymnastics coach. The reason this is important is that it’s become clear we have a problem with sexual abuse in sports, and her story, or some version…

  • Loneliness and the Loss of Third Places

We are much more likely to watch Netflix instead of spending time in a third place. We are a culture that is seeing less and less interest in churches, club memberships, leagues, etc., and one that provides fewer clubs, small events, and other spaces for people to hang out in. That has hurt us socially. Media has made us much more afraid of each other, pushing us away from forming communities. (Fox specializes in terrifying their own audience and telling them to keep coming back to learn all the things they should be scared of, and others have followed in their footsteps.)They have helped us become less and less interested in creating third places. If we do gather, it’s usually for some specific purpose or event, not something we do on an ongoing basis. So, we never form the bonds that give us a sense of belonging.

We are lonely. That loneliness is causing immense harm. We don’t belong anywhere, but we should belong and try to find ways to create a space where people can belong.

  • Better in 2006

As I’ve discussed before, I’ve spent years working on simply being better instead of making new year’s resolutions. I figure that’s it’s better to concentrate on the goal of being a better person every day than it is to make resolutions that go away after a few weeks. I’ve worked, with some success, and continue…
