Can You Give Eight Minutes to a Loved One in Need?

According to this clip, that’s all the time it takes to help someone in pain feel good. Eight minutes. But that’s eight minutes where you simply hold space for them, not eight minutes of you speaking or trying to “fix” them. Eight minutes of simply being with them in their pain.

Can you do that for them? I like to think that I would be the person some of my friends would reach out to and ask for eight minutes of my time, but I’m afraid that too many of us aren’t thinking of reaching out and aren’t good about sitting with them when they do.

I enjoyed this clip of Henry Rollins talking about being overwhelmed by the pain and injustice he has seen in his travels.

He recognizes that he is “one guy.” He can’t possibly fix all of it, and trying to would be pointless. So he sees the opportunities where he can make a difference and hopes that more of us will try to “clean the spots” we can, as well.

  • History Survives When We Talk About It

No matter what our leaders want to include or exclude from the official histories, we know these events happened. We may not be successful in getting large-scale claims of abuse into the history books of the future, though we should try, but we can all continue to talk about them. The mainstream may want us to be quiet about the abuse that happens within the family, the church, etc., but we can tell our stories. Most of all, we can support the people telling those stories. They are preserving our history and reminding all of us that the survivors are out here, we know what was done, and we will not accept the lies. We can ensure the truth is out there for those who want to learn and do everything we can to ensure that history is shared.

You’d be surprised how effective you can be just by being available to listen. It may not seem like much, but it is so infrequent that someone actually takes the time to really stop…
