What we don’t hear a lot about are the details, specifically, about what happens when the treatment resources don’t exist to meet the need. We may not think we are rounding up unhoused people and putting them in jails, but where do we think they will go when there aren’t enough treatment options? That’s going to include a lot of kids escaping abusive homes. Other kids end up hanging around the ER waiting for treatment if they aren’t in a penal facility already. Plenty of others remain in dangerous situations while they and their parents stay and search for somewhere to get treatment.
If you worked for someone who paid your salary and then came back a year or two later and said you had to give it back, you wouldn’t work for them any longer. That’s what is happening with these insurance clawbacks. Given everything we know about how difficult insurance companies make it for therapists just to get paid, is it any wonder it’s so difficult to find one in network with your insurance?

Most of all, the article clearly shows no easy answers. There isn’t one thing broken in this system that can be quickly turned around and made better. It’s everything: government funding, insurance coverage, a lack of people to treat patients, a confusing and frustrating system to find help, and a system so under-resourced that kids are sent to facilities 5-6 hours away from their parents.
You don’t fix that overnight. You surely don’t fix it by ignoring the system and avoiding talking about serious mental health issues because they make us feel uncomfortable. That’s why people are out here dying instead of getting help.
