Has it been that long?

Gee has it really been since June that I posted anything here? For that matter, how did it get to be July 9th already? I’m not complaining, last weekend was filled with so much of the fun and frivolity that comes along with celebrating my, and the nation’s, birthday that I seriously have nothing at all to complain about. It just all flew by so quickly and then I simply swung back into work made so quickly that it doesn’t even seem like I had any time to really savor it all.

Eh, but life’s like that, isn’t it? If you’re not careful, you miss a lot.

  • Running on Fumes

I heard someone on the radio use this phrase to describe herself as we were out grabbing a few last-minute items to assist with riding out Hurricane Ida. She was talking about evacuating her home in New Orleans at 10:30 last night, driving to Alabama to seek shelter, and then doing the show remotely from there.

Here, we aren’t in as much of a need to evacuate, we are further from the coast and the storm surge, but it’s still going to be a long, dangerous couple of days. So, we are spending a lot of time, and both mental and physical energy, preparing to possibly be without power, for needing to leave if the house is damaged, and so forth. It’s a lot. And that is on top of all the mental energy necessary to deal with large COVID outbreaks we’ve had in recent weeks, all of the recent events in world news, and the various personal and professional challenges that we are also dealing with.

Running on fumes is a really good description of how I think most of the entire state feels today, and yet, there’s a storm coming that we are all going to have to deal with, while everything else just continues on as well.

  • Good news

Cross-posted on both my blogs: It’s been a long week. I know I’ve been quiet around here, but besides being just a busy week, I’ve been distracted all week by the birth, and subsequent complications, of our new niece. I’m happy to say that she is progressing, and they anticipate her being able to go…

  • Three years ago…

It’s Sept. 21 2004. Three years ago at this time, the world was still recovering from 9/11, yet somehow life had moved on. Three years ago at this time, my own life had moved on, and another event was about to change my life. The two events will always be tied together in my mind,…

  • Combining my two sides

As you know, if you’ve been reading here long, my two blogs really, to me, represent the two different sides of me. My tech blog is, obviously, my geeky, technical side, while this blog is more about my emotional, sensitive and creative side. Well, now with my new birthday present, a Minolta X700 SLR camera,…

  • The Difference Between Knowledge and Life Experience

You should not feel sorry for me. This post isn’t about me. As I said, I have a condition that millions of people deal with every day. I’ll do the same. It’s about the reality that people around us are living with things that require efforts that we don’t understand. Just showing up for life every day requires effort and dedication from everyone you know. The amount of effort and challenges are different, and they are not distributed equally. You shouldn’t dismiss anyone’s struggles, especially if you’ve not been in those same circumstances yourself.

Some things have to be experienced to see all the details. When someone is willing to share the details of their challenges, listen and learn. Raise their voices instead of assuming you know the answers.

Experience is a hard teacher. We all can learn the lessons from those who’ve lived it.

  • It’s OK to Just Enjoy Something For Yourself

I came upon this idea later in life than some of you may have. Thanks to an abusive childhood and a fairly demanding church involvement in my teens and twenties, I was about 30 when I finally gave myself the freedom to take on a hobby just because I enjoyed it.

For me, I grew up never feeling good enough or worthy. I needed someone else to tell me it was OK for me to do something, or heaven forbid to spend money on something just because I liked it.
