Depression screening

Reading through the blogs today I saw a post about Thursday, Oct. 6 being National Depression Screening Day.

Much like that post talks about, it’s never a bad idea to get a free depression screening. Trust me, if you’re thinking that you might be a little depressed, find out, get the correct treatment, medication, therapy, both, etc. and get a handle on this illness before it gets worse. Don’t let it take more of your life than it already has.

I was just listening to the latest In The Trenches podcast. It’s normally a techie podcast but today Kevin had a nice interview with David Newberger, who spent quite a bit of time dealing with health issues that the doctor’s couldn’t diagnose. Turns out he was suffering from Conversion Disorder, which is where he developed…

  • It’s All So Toxic

Of course, one of the tell-tale signs of depression, and unhealthy responses to trauma, like abuse, is overly black and white thinking. Going to extremes, if you will. So, it’s easy for many of us to fall into these toxic traps. It’s easy to think that we should feel shame about what happened to us, or that we can somehow rid ourselves of that shame, and anger, by simply refusing to do anything but be positive. But neither one of these is real healing. Real healing, like real emotions, and real people, are messier than that.

It’s still worth it though, as are a lot of those messy emotions and people too. If you let yourself get out of the black and white thinking, you just might see that too.

Sugar Ray Leonard and Reacting to Survivors

I was listening to the latest BS Report podcast on ESPN today, an interview done by Bill Simmons with Sugar Ray Leonard. I was aware that Ray openly discusses the sexual abuse he suffered as a child in his recent autobiography, but I hardly expected that to be a major portion of the interview. If…

It occured to me yesterday while I was filling out a 200 question “personality profile” as part of my job search, that I’ll never be able to sit and take that sort of things without thinking about the hours and hours spent filling out similar profiles for depression screening, etc. back when I first started…

  1. Thank you for being talking about National Depression Screening day. Screening for depression is one of the most effective ways of catching this disabling condition so that it can be effectively treated. But why only 1 day a year? Because it takes too long to administer the screening. So to overcome that, we at AuroraMD automated the screening process, so that it happens automatically in the primary care waiting room with little staff time. Then the results are presented to the doctor in the exam room. See our website http://www.auroramd.com .
    Is your doctor screening everyday?
