Abuse Related Interest Lists?

Over on my tech blog, I’ve been writing a few posts about the challenges of getting your posts actually viewed by people who have “liked” your Facebook page, and now some more thoughts about adding a page you want to follow more closely to an interest list. That got me thinking about creating, and sharing, a child abuse survivor related interest list over on Facebook.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the time right now to try and put that together, however since you can create a public list and share it so others could subscribe to it, I did want to reach out to my readers, and Facebook “likers”, and see if anyone had done that and wanted to share the list in the comments. Let me know if you have done that, especially if you’ve added this blog’s Facebook page to it as well!

  • Following My Own Advice – Calling Out False Pedophile Stories

I have been on record saying that if you truly believe in a cause, and the importance of it, you need to be the first to call out untruths.

I’ve said it about false rape allegations, false child abuse allegations, fake hate crimes, etc.

If you believe rape, abuse, and hate crimes are big issues that our society needs to be concerned with, and that the victims need to believed, you need to be the first to call it out when someone undermines the issue by spreading false stories.

So, while it may cost me some followers, let me just say this. If you believe QAnon conspiracy theories about elite pedophile gangs and sex trafficking rings with zero proof aside from some seeming coincidences with a bunch of half-true facts, and go spreading them around, you are undermining the very serious issue we have in society with actual, real pedophiles, elite and otherwise, and real, true to life, sex trafficking.

  • It’s still not safe to be honest

The question isn’t about sharing or not sharing, it’s about why we, as a society, tolerate the haters. Why, in a stadium full of tens of thousands of fans, did he have to take that on by himself? How many people heard someone tell a fellow human being to kill themselves and laughed?

How many people heard it or read about it and decided against asking for help? How many of them will we lose?

Extremism in Pursuit of Good is Still Extremism

No, what we need are not more registries. We need something much more comprehensive than that, something that will take more work than that, and something that focuses so much more on the children being abused and how to help them than on anything else, especially things that make us feel safer without providing much benefit at all.

Child Abuse Advocacy Groups Caught up in Facebook QAnon Purge?

Am I sad that there are fewer child abuse advocacy groups on Facebook overall? Sure. But, what makes me sadder is how many legitimate advocacy groups fell massively short of their duty to tell the truth to their followers. How many continued to share these theories well after they were disproved in some bizarre effort to show how much more they cared about children, while diverting attention and resources from real victims and organizations trying to help them.

So no. I don’t feel sorry for you if your page was taken down by Facebook for violating their terms of service around spreading disinformation. You owed real survivors, and the people who followed you to learn more about true child abuse stories, more than that. You are right about one thing, child abuse and child trafficking is an incredibly important issue. Spreading lies doesn’t help that message, it provides the rest of the world an excuse to ignore it. If you truly want to advocate for children, stick to the truth, or suffer the consequences.
