One of the more prominent victims of sexual abuse by a priest, Patrick McSorley, has apparently killed himself this week.
I think the best summary of this situation is what Andrew Sullivan had to say about it, “some scars never heal“. No, some never do, you either learn to live with them, or they kill you. Unfortunately for Patrick, the scars got the best of him.

Pin We’ve already done hard things, but we don’t give ourselves credit for it. Typically, we do the opposite, blaming ourselves for the trauma or our mental health struggles, thus seeing ourselves as weak, the kind of people who can’t do hard things. That carries over into all aspects of our lives. We don’t take risks in jobs, relationships, and other areas because we don’t think we’re capable, and we don’t think we could survive failure.
Which is weird, given how much we have survived.

This sad event on the heels of the Vatican’s pronouncement that Americans are being too hard on these priests. The Church says since they can no longer keep an eye on abusers once they’ve been forced to leave the priesthood that children are safer if priests are allowed to remain despite being abusers.
YOu know, my tax money goes to fund SEVERAL very nice facilities where these abusive priests can rot.
I’m just disgusted.
