Catholic Church scandals

My wife mentioned hearing this interview last night and I wasn’t sure if there would be anything for me to point to if I tried to blog about it, but it turns out that someone has the transcript of the interview on their site (for now) and a link to the audio.

It concerns a series of stories that are coming from the Dallas Morning News regarding the world-wide scope of the abuse and the Church using it’s internation reach to transfer priests and keep them away from the authorities. It all sounds very appalling and I expect the summer will be filled with stories about priests abusing children, further eroding any sort of support for the church.

Update: Here the link to the reports.

So, fellow survivors, start collecting cards, notes, and emails that thank you for something. Then on the rough days, go back through the stack and remind yourself of all the good you have done, and continue to do, all the worth you have, and all the value you bring to others. Also, make sure you’re letting people know the value they have, so they can start building their file!

  • Running on Fumes

I heard someone on the radio use this phrase to describe herself as we were out grabbing a few last-minute items to assist with riding out Hurricane Ida. She was talking about evacuating her home in New Orleans at 10:30 last night, driving to Alabama to seek shelter, and then doing the show remotely from there.

Here, we aren’t in as much of a need to evacuate, we are further from the coast and the storm surge, but it’s still going to be a long, dangerous couple of days. So, we are spending a lot of time, and both mental and physical energy, preparing to possibly be without power, for needing to leave if the house is damaged, and so forth. It’s a lot. And that is on top of all the mental energy necessary to deal with large COVID outbreaks we’ve had in recent weeks, all of the recent events in world news, and the various personal and professional challenges that we are also dealing with.

Running on fumes is a really good description of how I think most of the entire state feels today, and yet, there’s a storm coming that we are all going to have to deal with, while everything else just continues on as well.

  1. There is so much I could say about this but I think two quotes from the articles speak very clearly of the church, these acts on the lasting scars.

“For me it would be a tragedy to reduce the role of a pastor to that of a cop,” said Salesian Cardinal Oscar Rodríguez of Honduras, a leading candidate to succeed Pope John Paul II. “I’d be prepared to go to jail rather than harm one of my priests.” One would suppose the duty of protecting innocent children is secondary to protecting priests.

“He gets away scot-free,” the man’s wife says.

But her husband is still haunted.

“Every time he gets a migraine,” she says “it’s a reminder.”
