Catholic Church scandals
My wife mentioned hearing this interview last night and I wasn’t sure if there would be anything for me to point to if I tried to blog about it, but it turns out that someone has the transcript of the interview on their site (for now) and a link to the audio.
It concerns a series of stories that are coming from the Dallas Morning News regarding the world-wide scope of the abuse and the Church using it’s internation reach to transfer priests and keep them away from the authorities. It all sounds very appalling and I expect the summer will be filled with stories about priests abusing children, further eroding any sort of support for the church.
Update: Here the link to the reports.
There is so much I could say about this but I think two quotes from the articles speak very clearly of the church, these acts on the lasting scars.
“For me it would be a tragedy to reduce the role of a pastor to that of a cop,” said Salesian Cardinal Oscar RodrÃguez of Honduras, a leading candidate to succeed Pope John Paul II. “I’d be prepared to go to jail rather than harm one of my priests.” One would suppose the duty of protecting innocent children is secondary to protecting priests.
“He gets away scot-free,” the man’s wife says.
But her husband is still haunted.
“Every time he gets a migraine,” she says “it’s a reminder.”
