Lauren Book on Fight, Flight, or Freeze

Somehow, even though this is from 2016, I hadn’t seen it until last night. It’s a TEDx talk by a survivor and advocate Lauren Book. (https://laurenskids.org)

She shares her own story and some words about going from the victim to advocate and how we can all advocate for children, but the part that really caught my attention was the beginning, and no, not just because she uses an air horn. It’s the description of our responses to trauma and how they are just part of us, mostly outside of our control, especially as children. Lauren’s freeze response wasn’t just a one-time event either; it went on for years and was tied to thinking that all of it was her own fault.

If this sounds familiar, that’s because it is really common. We just don’t talk about it. We don’t talk about sexual abuse at all, and if we do, this kind of response is usually met with some nasty comments about why we waited to say anything. Those comments simply communicate that the person saying them knows nothing about the brain and trauma response.

Don’t be that person. Watch and learn a thing or two.

Leah asks a good question in the comments for that last post: Why is it so hard for us (survivors) to compliment ourselves, feel good about our work and the like?! – I too have experienced this and it is frustrating. I think a large part of the answer has to do with comfort levels….

You are my online community, and while your numbers might not be as large as the number of followers I had on other platforms, I’m not worried about how this platform will change and become dangerous to any of you. This platform, MY platform, is safe for survivors, for those of you with mental health struggles, and for those of you dealing with illness, oppression, hatred, and discrimination. There are no shareholders to be beholden to, no one tracking you, no ads. There’s nothing here but one guy reminding you all that you are not alone.

  • Sorry

Sorry for the couple of spam comments yesterday. The server this site is on had a Perl problem that made my installation of both Movable Type and MT-Blacklist stop working correctly even though the comments functions kept working. So my anti-spam tool wasn’t working and I couldn’t get into MT to delete the spam comments,…

  • Rethinking free speech?

Sue’s gotten herself riled up over a book that was written to defend “Boylovers”. She’s titles her post “Rethinking free speech”, and while I think we can all relate to that reaction, I’m not sure that it’s the right one. Here’s my thinking on this. Let’s suppose there was a law that said you couldn’t…
