Light at the End of the Tunnel?

Maybe, just maybe, things are starting to get back to normal around here. After a couple of huge projects that had me working much more than my 40 hours per week, and taking up pretty much all of my mental energy, which ended just in time for the annual ILTA conference, where I was not only attending all week, but also speaking a couple of those days, I’m hopeful that things are settling down now.

I admit that this site, and the Survivor Network, haven’t been the center of my attention for quite a while. I had to quit sending out the weekly updates to subscribers about activity on the site, because I’ve barely had enough time to look at it myself!

So, assuming things have started to calm down a bit, I should get back to having a few spare brain cycles to think about abuse issues, and that should lead to getting back to blogging, and following things on the network again. Maybe I’ll even get out some more email and twitter updates about the network. Wouldn’t that be a nice change!

On the other hand, I do find it somewhat difficult to get back into the survivor mindset. I’ve spent many years working on healing, and now it’s just not really a part of my day to day life anymore. Still, I’m sure I can manage to find something to say occasionally, so I’ll still be out here, doing my thing, and saying things when I have something to say. I hope you’ll stick around!

But, that’s not what I want to talk about today, because, frankly, I think we’re all talked out on the subject, or at least I feel like I’m all talked out right now. If you don’t realize that anxiety and other mental health issues are sitting heavy on all of us this year, I don’t know that there’s anything I can say that will convince you of it. I want to talk about some good things, because, why not? I want to appreciate the following:

No matter what happens with the election, the sun rose today. It will set tonight, and rise again tomorrow. And I am here to see it.

I am thankful for the many friends and family members we’ve been in touch with in the last few days, even if it’s just to text and say “WTF”?

Laughter, because sometimes there’s nothing else to do but laugh, and it’s good for you.

You are here, reading this. You’re Alive!

Hope, that as long as there is a tomorrow for any of us, there is hope in the fact that things are always changing in the world, and in our lives.

Love. For each other, and ourselves.

    Nature.

The technology that lets us all check in with each other, across the world, at any time.

    Note About Comments

Someone left a couple of comments on the site last night, anonymously, and then sent me an email using the email form anonymously as well, requesting that I remove the comments they had made, as they were embarrassed by having made them public. I agreed to honor that request, feeling that any comments made here…

  • More anger

When did it become unhealthy to not yell and scream when you’re angry? What I mean is, I am not someone who yells and screams when I’m angry, but that doesn’t mean I’m repressing my anger. It’s just not how I choose to express my anger. I’m not burying it and letting it fester, I’m…

That’s a good thing, isn’t it? Is being too busy at work and trying to make time to have a life for you and friends/partners, ie life in general, for most people whether they were abused or not, is that not what we should be working towards as survivors? Why should you have to think about abuse issues at all if, for example, the weather’s nice and you just want to go out, or meet your friends, or prepare for a public speaking engagement?

One of the things I’m proudest of is that fact that the kid who abused me, never stole my summers, it’s still my favourite time of year and I took my break from life in general including, this site included, but even in that break any relevant news still got posted, sometimes, programmes have to be broadcast and articles published, and trials to take place, to remind you why you founded the blog in the first place. Maybe Twitter’s led people to believe there there needs to be an infinite production line of updates every 30 seconds and that simply isn’t practical in my view.

When it’s too cold to go out though, my view might change!

  2. I just got home at midnight last night from a 10 day vacation with my husband to Idaho to visit our daughter and her family; then to Salt Lake City, Utah for 3 more days with our family at a Civil War Reenactment which my husband participated in; then on to Arches National Park near Moab, Utah; next to Mesa Verde, New Mexico; and then home driving through New Mexico; Texas and Oklahoma to Arkansas where we live. Life does happen. I, sometimes, especially when I am have finished a growth spurt in the recovery process, need to take a break and just experience regular life for awhile. Life shouldn’t be about living in the pain of the past. It should be about being in the joy of the present.
