I can only imagine what it’s like to have a kid in the midst of the media whirlwind that is happening in Pennsylvania, but this does present an opportunity as well: In light of the recent grand jury report on child sex abuse by priests, how should parents talk to children about the subject? Early…
They can’t go down to the local community college and sign up for a class where they can practice explaining all of the complexities of their mental health in simple terms. They’re experimenting with what works, what is comfortable, what is confusing, etc. Give them some space to do that and know that when they are still at this uncomfortable level they trust you to be someone they want to talk to.
Don’t ruin it for them by being dismissive or not listening. They need you to listen and they need practice in telling their stories. Be the same place for that.
These are all possible, they don’t require one person to fix things, which is where I suspect many of us get stuck. We want to support a loved one, or friend, who is struggling and in need of support, but that looks like a lot, probably more than we can handle. Frankly, it is more than you can handle, that’s why we all need the larger network. It only makes sense!
Last year, my wife and I decided our mantra would be “buy the ticket, go to the show” as often as possible. This year, we saw our first show last week and have been busy making plans for more, traveling in some cases and simply driving to New Orleans after work in others. I know it helped me get through 2024. I don’t know that it will solve everything 2025 brings us, but I know it will be a positive event for us and that the effects covered in the article below are accurate.Â
