Good stuff

This was good news weekend for me. On Friday evening we found out that Angela got a new job, and then Saturday morning one of my best friends, Jen, had her baby! Amelia Elizabeth Meyers came into the world at 3:38AM Saturday and mother and baby are both fine. That’s awesome!

Obviously both Jen and Angela are looking forward to the new challenges in their lives. I’m sure they’ll both be great at it, they are both incredibly strong, smart and talented women. As different as they are, they have that in common, and I am lucky enough to be able count one as my wife and the other as a good friend. There’s something to be said for having people you have the utmost respect for in your life. I think it’s almost a source of pride for me to have people who I respect so much, care about and respect me in return.

It’s been a good weekend to remember all the good that life has to offer!

There is just something about a driving vacation for me that is so much more relaxing than flying. Flying, to me, is always about being on time, rushing to the airport and through security, worrying about what you’ve packed, how long this is going to take, will I make my connection, etc. Driving is just…

  • Long week

Man I’m glad it’s Friday. I’ve been working on so many different things this week that I’ve completely lost all track of what day it is, which makes the week seem really, really long! You know, because like Weds night I wasn’t thinking “two more days until the weekend”, I was just getting through Weds…

Let’s Talk About Your Friend with Social Anxiety

Someone you know is likely struggling with anxiety. Likely, many of you are, too, just like I am. With general anxiety running rampant across society right now, we can also assume that a large portion of social anxiety is going around too. If you have a friend who has struggled to keep plans or stay in touch, be kind. Recognize their anxiety and take a small action that sends the message that you are happy to see them. For me, it’s been a sincere hug or smile upon seeing me. It’s an immediate reminder that this person wants to be with me. There is an undeniable feeling that seeing me makes them happy.

They probably have no idea how much they have done by expressing that to me, but it makes all the difference in the world. I can immediately go from being all in my insecurities to all in the acceptance and warmth of long-time friends. It might not seem like much, but it is.

  • SafeTALK Training

This past weekend, I attended a SafeTALK workshop put together by the local chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The half-day workshop is designed to help train folks to be more suicide aware, and to be “helpers” for those in need. The idea behind TALK is: Tell Ask Listen Keep safe. Obviously, if…

  • Networking as listening

Last night I attended a brief workshop-type class on social networking, as opposed to the computer networking that I usually study. 🙂 Being a typical IT guy, sometimes in social situations I can be a bit awkward, at best. Since I keep reading about most people find jobs through people they know, and since as…
