Wow

Gee it’s been awhile since I wrote anything here, huh? I guess by the time I got back from vacation I needed to catch up on so many things that I sort of lost track. There was a ton of work stuff to get to, there was spending some time with my wife, there was fixing up the laptop since the drive crashed the day before I left and I just sort of threw together a quick install to have something to work with on the road, there was the Irish Festival, a bunch of emails and everything else that comes with being gone for a little while.

The trip was good, got to spend a lot of time playing with the cameras and seeing some amazing scenery. I got to see my friend, Steve, who I haven’t seen in something like 5 years. It was a pretty good reminder of just how much has changed for me over that time. How different I am now, what with being healthier and happier. 😉

Lastly I think it was good because in some ways, it laid to rest some ghosts. It allowed me to enjoy spending time with someone who has been a good friend in the past and not have to feel guilty because I’ve changed so much and my interests have changed so much that we no longer have anything in common. That’s been my experience in most cases when it comes to people I used to go to church with, now that I recognize how much being that involved in the church actually contributed to my illness more than it helped (by allowing me to think that being just like these people would make me happy somehow), we have nothing in common and I mostly just make them uncomfortable. Being with Steve wasn’t like that. We still actually do have some things in common and can still relate and enjoy seeing each other. I’m glad for that.

I had a good time on vacation this week. It was tiring trying to get everywhere I wanted to go and see everything I wanted to see, but I really enjoy that. There’s something about the adventure that really makes me feel alive. Plus, getting out and seeing the larger world really puts my problems…

  • Quick Life Update

With everything being brand new it’s been a little tough to develop any routine, let alone one that includes posting to the blog on a regular basis. After one week at the new job, I’m just starting to develop a bit of a routine there, but outside of work, life is really a work in…

  • Running on Fumes

I heard someone on the radio use this phrase to describe herself as we were out grabbing a few last-minute items to assist with riding out Hurricane Ida. She was talking about evacuating her home in New Orleans at 10:30 last night, driving to Alabama to seek shelter, and then doing the show remotely from there.

Here, we aren’t in as much of a need to evacuate, we are further from the coast and the storm surge, but it’s still going to be a long, dangerous couple of days. So, we are spending a lot of time, and both mental and physical energy, preparing to possibly be without power, for needing to leave if the house is damaged, and so forth. It’s a lot. And that is on top of all the mental energy necessary to deal with large COVID outbreaks we’ve had in recent weeks, all of the recent events in world news, and the various personal and professional challenges that we are also dealing with.

Running on fumes is a really good description of how I think most of the entire state feels today, and yet, there’s a storm coming that we are all going to have to deal with, while everything else just continues on as well.

    One Thing at a Time

Obviously, things have been a little busy in the life of Mike lately. Actually, it’s not so much that things have been busy that’s kept me away from this blog, it’s the overwhelming number of considerations that have kept my mind occupied on things other than writing about being a survivor. So, I haven’t had…

  • The Difference Between Knowledge and Life Experience

You should not feel sorry for me. This post isn’t about me. As I said, I have a condition that millions of people deal with every day. I’ll do the same. It’s about the reality that people around us are living with things that require efforts that we don’t understand. Just showing up for life every day requires effort and dedication from everyone you know. The amount of effort and challenges are different, and they are not distributed equally. You shouldn’t dismiss anyone’s struggles, especially if you’ve not been in those same circumstances yourself.

Some things have to be experienced to see all the details. When someone is willing to share the details of their challenges, listen and learn. Raise their voices instead of assuming you know the answers.

Experience is a hard teacher. We all can learn the lessons from those who’ve lived it.

  • Car Trouble

Is there anything more stressful than having car trouble? I’m fairly sure that it’s an alternator problem, but the car is only a year old. I shouldn’t be having that sort of problem with it! Not to mention the fact that I just had it at the dealership for a recall last week. (Unrelated problem.)…
