All better now

You might have noticed some funkiness going on here since last weekend. The site actually was taken offline as a precaution with the host having their netblock hit by a DDoS attack. Then when it came back there was a problem with CPanel that wouldn’t let me login or FTP or anything. Then everything was back except the MySQL databases that run the backend of both the blog and the forums were gone. Both have been restored from backups, almost. The forum backup was from Dec. 2. Everything from that point on has been lost. So if you registered since then, I’m sorry but you’ll have to register again. I’ll try and get some of the articles linked back that I had put up in there since, but no promises. I’ll have to see if I can find them again!

The blog database backup and the current archives gave me all the entries to the site, but some of the more recent comments had not been backed up. Again, I’m very sorry for that, and I’ll try and keep more current backups now that the holidays are over and I might actually have time to do that! 🙂

Now, where were we? Oh yeah, hope you all had a happy and safe New Year’s celebration. I rang the new year in restoring database backups while my wife, who hasn’t been sleeping well due to coughing and cold-like symptoms was fast asleep when the new year came in. One exciting couple, aren’t we?

  • Holiday time

It occurs to me as I write this, that many of us are probably dealing with holiday stress right about now, or at least will be some time soon. Between the holiday cards, shopping,  the get-togethers and the family gatherings, the holidays can be a whole lot of work. It can be a pretty exhausting…

  • Lauren Book on Fight, Flight, or Freeze

Somehow, even though this is from 2016, I hadn’t seen it until last night. It’s a TEDx talk by survivor, and advocate Lauren Book. (https://laurenskids.org)

In it. she shares her own story, and some words about going from victim, to advocate and how we can all advocate for children, but the part that really caught my attention was the beginning, and no not just because she uses an air horn. It’s the description of our responses to trauma, and how they are just part of us, mostly outside of our control, especially as children. Lauren’s freeze response wasn’t just a one-time event either, it went on for years, and was tied to thinking that all of it was her own fault.

If this sound familiar, that’s because it is really common. We just don’t talk about it. We don’t talk about sexual abuse at all, and if we do, this kind of response is usually met with some nasty comments about why we waited to say anything. Those comments simply communicate that the person saying them, knows nothing about the brain and trauma response.

Don’t be that person. Watch and learn a thing or two.

  • While I’m Away

I’ll be leaving work early today and hitting the road to visit the in-laws to do our Christmas celebration. I’ll be limited to dialup access all weekend so I don’t expect I’ll be getting much content added around here. I just wanted to take this opportunity to point out that, even when I’m not posting…

    Compline

Today, as we were walking around Savannah, my wife and I came across a lovely Presbyterian Church and noticed that they had a sign out about a Compline service that evening starting at 9:00PM. It sounded pretty interesting, and as we are always on the lookout for new and interesting things when we are traveling,…
