We’re not all the same

Tamara left me a comment on Facebook today that made me think. As you may or may not know, I’ve been doing a bit of traveling, and will continue to in the next couple of weeks, both as part of my work, and for some vacation. She noted that for her it would be difficult to be away from home, away from her “grounding” spot that much.

I can certainly understand that, but for me it’s different. I need the ability to explore from time to time in order to get out of my own head and see the larger world around me. Traveling is a great way to do that, though it certainly isn’t the only way. There are plenty of other ways to get outside my own head without leaving town as well. 🙂

It does go to show, though, that there’s no “right” way to heal. We’re all individuals, we’ve all lived through different forms of abuse, and the things we need to do to heal ourselves will also be different. There’s no fool proof formula to overcoming abuse, we all have to find the right ways to do what we need to do for ourselves. That can be a struggle at times, but it’s what makes all of us special, we’re all unique and worth the effort!

I became an uncle for the second time today. My sister-in-law gave birth to a baby girl this morning. I can’t wait to go meet my little niece. On the other hand, I’m also supposed to be meeting the other member of my family that I talked about earlier, to talk about the abuse and…

  • So, How Are You Doing?

But, that’s not what I want to talk about today, because, frankly, I think we’re all talked out on the subject, or at least I feel like I’m all talked out right now. If you don’t realize that anxiety and other mental health issues are sitting heavy on all of us this year, I don’t know that there’s anything I can say that will convince you of it. I want to talk about some good things, because, why not? I want to appreciate the following:

No matter what happens with the election, the sun rose today. It will set tonight, and rise again tomorrow. And I am here to see it.

I am thankful for the many friends and family members we’ve been in touch with in the last few days, even if it’s just to text and say “WTF”?

Laughter, because sometimes there’s nothing else to do but laugh, and it’s good for you.

You are here, reading this. You’re Alive!

Hope, that as long as there is a tomorrow for any of us, there is hope in the fact that things are always changing in the world, and in our lives.

Love. For each other, and ourselves.

    Nature.

The technology that lets us all check in with each other, across the world, at any time.

  • History Survives When We Talk About It

No matter what our leaders want to include or exclude from the official histories, we know these events happened. We may not be successful in getting large-scale claims of abuse into the history books of the future, though we should try, but we can all continue to talk about them. The mainstream may want us to be quiet about the abuse that happens within the family, the church, etc., but we can tell our stories. We have voices, our own online spaces, connections, and the freedom to speak.

Most of all, we can support the people telling those stories. They are preserving our history and reminding all of us that the survivors are out here, we know what was done, and we will not accept the lies. We can ensure the truth is out there for those who want to learn and do everything we can to ensure that history is shared.

  1. I’m like You Mike I love to travel , to see the new , explore . I tend to love change , of course the kind that feels good is best but even change that is not great helps me learn and see people for who they are and mostly see myself and learn . I am a touchy feely person and love the visual .
My dh is a homebody he loves the security of the sameness . He didn’t mind travel but some of the things he liked were those that reminded him of home lol .
You are so right we all heal in our own way and our own time . I tend to come alive and grow when I travel and experience the new .
In regards to healing or opinion putting stereotypes , & labeling etc. I always tell people not to put me in a box because I probably won’t fit and I just get stuck .

  2. Your last few posts really show a healthy balance. I like that about your writing, Mike! Would you submit one of them, or an older post, to THE BLOG CARNIVAL AGAINST CHILD ABUSE this month? I’m doing this edition myself, in honor of World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse on Thursday. And as always, I so appreciate your support and promoting the various carnival editions. Thanks!

  3. I’m happy that you are finding ways to heal.

It’s very difficult to find other survivors who are willing to talk about their abuses.

I am a survivor and it is much more difficult for me since I am a guy, and it’s that much more embarrassing and tougher to talk about it.

    Take care of yourself.

    Glad I found you!

    Sincerely,

    David
