High School Facebook Predator, jailed for 15yrs

It’s been a week since a former high school student who used Facebook to blackmail several of his classmates aged 15-17 into sexual acts – after being previously in contact with the police after threatening to blow up his own school.

Though you can Google or Wiki Anthony Stancl’s name for the extended details, there has been an interesting debate springing up in the comments at CNet News, and you can read them here. If you head to the Huffington Post news aggregation link, its own glossary will lead you to video at CBS news about the case. The second video is in a separate link that pre-dates the sentencing, but it re-iterates basic advice about Facebook in general which is repeated in the CNet comments.

    We have to have serious discussions about mental health resources, for adults and kids. This isn’t even about stigma or awareness, this is a system with fundamental flaws, that creates this lack of available, and affordable, resources. This is a society that is unable, and unwilling, to provide basic care for too many of its own members. Is that the society we want to live in? I hope not, but as long as we continue down a path where the best plan we can come up for a teenager struggling with suicidal thoughts is 17 days on a gurney, and sedated, inside of an ER, we are not that society.

    But what is the least harmful way to deal with that? What is the least harmful way to inform kids of the wars in Ukraine and Gaza? What is the least harmful way to prepare kids for the natural disasters that seem only to get worse each year?

    I don’t know. What I do know is that dealing with all of this is hard and only part of the causes of increased needs for youth mental health. Our current mental health system failed many people for years when the need wasn’t this high. What we are doing isn’t working. Continuing to do the same thing won’t work. Fighting against increased funding and availability of resources won’t work. Hiding our heads in the sand and saying, “not my kid,” won’t work. This is a society-wide problem that will require societal change. I am not sure we are willing to make those changes, but an entire generation of kids will pay the price for that unwillingness.
