Large Scale Paedophile Ring Uncovered and Broken Up

News wires in general have reported on the tracking and break-up of a worldwide paedophile ring that peaked at 70,000 members sharing child sexual abuse images involving a minimum of 230 boys. You can read the story at the BBC here;

and the link in the centre of the story reports on the first Briton to be charged in his home country out of over 100, separate to those found in the Phillipines. So far 670 specific suspects have been identified but in the style of Operation Ore and other large-scale trawls, the server records are expected to reveal many more.

  • Why Advocates Should Think Twice About Laws They Support

    Law enforcement officials don’t just want to be able to scan for CSAM. That’s the excuse to get the public to buy into mass surveillance. “It’s for the kids” is disingenuous. It’s not for the kids to them, it’s to open the door to the police, and anyone with some skill, to watch ALL of our communication and use it in any way they see fit.

    Yes, that will include that cop who’s a little too friendly with the teens in the neighborhood, the one abusing his wife, or the one stalking an ex. It’ll also include officials with political leanings spying on opponents, dictators with unfettered access to all communication coming and going to their citizens, and hackers getting access to blackmail material.

    All of it. Out there for anyone with the keys to see, store, and use as they see fit.

  • Why do we get Stressed About Replying Quickly?

    My first thought, obviously, was about the workplace and the culture we have created there that rewards being “always-on” but I think so much of this pressure permeates beyond work. As technology has become commonplace we all live with this pressure and this expectation. Think about it, how many times in a given week are you apologizing to friends and family because you couldn’t get back to them right away?

    I do it all the time.

    Heck, I’ve gotten text messages while having lunch or dinner with a friend, catching up with someone I haven’t gotten to see much for the last couple of years, and then apologized for doing that and being unavailable. Why? That makes no sense but we live in a culture where being connected to technology all the time also means that we should be responsive all the time. Or at least we feel like we should. Frankly, that’s a lot of pressure.
