“One in six boys in the United States has experienced sexual abuse before turning 18. With few IRL recovery options, more of them are going online for support.”

Reading the details of what some male survivors have had to deal with as they search for support resources is awful. I’m glad that the internet, and social networks, can connect any survivors, male or female, but there should really be more resources for the number of male survivors that there truly are. Too many are not getting the support they need.

This is what matters. Having people around you with the knowledge and willingness to support you. Far too many survivors, youth and adults, have never had that. We’ve failed them as a society that values our own discomfort with the topic over supporting people we claim to care about.

Until we stop doing that and start connecting with anyone who has experienced childhood trauma, we’ll continue to see all of the negative effects writ large.

I may not necessarily agree with everything on Dr. Zoe’s list, but I am on-board with the idea of knowing ahead of time what kinds of activities, people, etc. will help take care of your mental health when you need it. You and I may not have a current mental health diagnosis right now, but we all are having low days, struggle days. Doing something about those, might just help us avoid spiraling into a situation where we do end up with something more serious.
