“When children run away from home or care, they are often running from something. Theirs are childhoods blighted by abuse, violence, family instability, and parental drug or alcohol misuse. For girls particularly, running away can be an attempt to escape sexual violence and abuse.”

It’s definitely something those who work with runaways should stop to consider. I have, in the past, met some kids who were homeless and living on the street, and frankly, where they were was better than where they came from. And yes, where they were, was freaking horrible.

That should tell you how bad it was where they came from.

I appreciate the fact that this therapist recognizes how difficult it is to come forward with these things because it does take a lot to talk about it, especially the first time you tell someone.

At the same time I wonder how differently we might look at ourselves as we try to heal if we knew that we were the 4th or 5th person who talked to that one therapist about being sexually abused that day?

It’d be hard to feel alone, for one, right?

This is true for trafficking, and it’s true for child sexual abuse, and it’s true for a variety of other ways in which people might try to take advantage of someone. People with poor mental health, poor connections to other people, and living in chaotic situations are more vulnerable. The best tool to prevent these things is to work on having fewer vulnerable people.

Mental health resources could go a long way.
