Link – Secrets, Shame & Mental Health
The study says keeping mental health issues secret creates shame in ourselves, and as we all know, shame drives people to feelings of worthlessness, self-harm, etc. All bad, bad things. So I have to agree with the article’s conclusion:
In regards to shame and our mental health, I think the most helpful thing we can all do is to talk about our issues. I realize this is often easier said than done, but I’ve never come across anyone who has regretted taking this path. The more we open up, the more we can reduce the stigma associated with brain disorders — and the less they will be associated with shame.
So keep talking, until talking isn’t a big deal any more, and everyone can feel safe talking, and less shame about their mental health issues. That’s where we need to head.
