Gnomedex

Yes, I’m here at Gnomedex again this year. Having a pretty good time, although in groups like this I find myself being somewhat guarded, and my past definitely shows up large at times. It’s a bit weird having people come up and talk to you because they read one of your sites, or more, and know so much about me. I mean, I’m naturally shy so it’s nice in the sense that people will start conversations with me and we can talk without me being too terribly shy. On the other hand, it just shows me how much I don’t naturally trust people right off the bat because I find my self being somewhat guarded in talking with them. Each year I get a little bit better though, so that’s good!

I’m sure I’ll get more practice at it throughout today and this evening. I’m looking forward to it!

Let’s Talk About Your Friend with Social Anxiety

Someone you know is likely struggling with anxiety. Likely, many of you are, too, just like I am. With general anxiety running rampant across society right now, we can also assume that a large portion of social anxiety is going around too. If you have a friend who has struggled to keep plans or stay in touch, be kind. Recognize their anxiety and take a small action that sends the message that you are happy to see them. For me, it’s been a sincere hug or smile upon seeing me. It’s an immediate reminder that this person wants to be with me. There is an undeniable feeling that seeing me makes them happy.

They probably have no idea how much they have done by expressing that to me, but it makes all the difference in the world. I can immediately go from being all in my insecurities to all in the acceptance and warmth of long-time friends. It might not seem like much, but it is.

  • Pictures

Baltimore pictures are up. Angela also has her own version here. We had a really nice time, and it was wonderful to get three whole days of uninterrupted “us” time. Baltimore wasn’t the greatest city I’ve ever visited but we enjoyed ourselves none the less!

  • Weekend Update

I had high hopes for getting a lot done this weekend, figuring since I would be laid up somewhat for the weekend after the surgery, I could drag out the laptop and do some things. I highly underestimated the power of Vicodin to knock me out cold. So, instead of being laid up and working,…

  • Great Holiday Weekend

Yes, here in the US, it was Independence Weekend, which also happens to coincide with my birthday. (Yes, having your birthday be a National Holiday and never have to work, is pretty freakin’ awesome!) Anyway, this year was a pretty big milestone, as I turned 40. No, I’m not all that upset about it. Frankly,…

Rock Bottom Revisited – A Personal Story

Earl K. Long Hospital, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Jan. 1997. Many people who’ve been through mental health issues, addiction, and so on, refer to “rock bottom”, that one place in time when things got so bad, they couldn’t get any worse. For me, that was Jan 1997. My marriage had just ended, and I quit therapy…
