Confidence and Anxiety

This Instagram post by @windycitytherapy spoke to me recently. It spoke to me on two different levels, actually. The first was that this was something I struggled with for years to learn and accept. That, no matter what happened, I would be OK. I’ve survived horrible things, I’ve gotten fired, I’ve been admitted to the hospital, I’ve embarrassed myself in front of large groups, had presentations go wrong, and I’m still here. I can feel confident because of that, not because everything will go perfectly.

The more I really thought about it though, it hit me on that second level, the “oh yeah, I really need to keep this in mind right now”, level. Truth be told, I’ve been struggling with anxiety lately. I can’t point to a single thing that makes any logical sense that I would be anxious about, and yet, there it is. My stomach gets tied up in knots at the thought of leaving the house. I’m constantly haunted by thoughts of not being good enough, of people not respecting me, or of being wrong. I’m terrified of not knowing how to handle something new perfectly, without a single hiccup.

These are ridiculous thoughts. I KNOW that. I’ve known that for years, and yet I find myself struggling to recognize them for what they are. The more I try to convince myself that I am good enough and that I am good at what I do, the less I believe it.

That’s why this post stopped me in my tracks. Confidence is not convincing myself that the things my anxiety is using to scare me couldn’t possibly happen. It’s the knowledge that even if things go horribly wrong. I’ll still be here. I’ve gone through it before, and I’ll do some stupid stuff again, I’m sure, which makes me embarrassed and humiliated.

And I’ll still be here. Trying to do it better the next time.

Now, I just have to figure out where this anxiety is coming from and keep moving forward. That might take some more work, but so be it. I’ve been through it before.

    What occurred to me as I thought more about this study, was that both of these are easily fixable. Giving and receiving compliments would not be such an anxiety-inducing activity if we simply practiced it more often. Even if you don’t know them very well. It will matter to them, and you’ll get to practice something that will make you a better, happier, person as well.

    Let’s Talk About Your Friend with Social Anxiety

    Someone you know is likely struggling with anxiety. Likely, many of you are, too, just like I am. With general anxiety running rampant across society right now, we can also assume that a large portion of social anxiety is going around too. If you have a friend who has struggled to keep plans or stay in touch, be kind. Recognize their anxiety and take a small action that sends the message that you are happy to see them. For me, it’s been a sincere hug or smile upon seeing me. It’s an immediate reminder that this person wants to be with me. There is an undeniable feeling that seeing me makes them happy.

    They probably have no idea how much they have done by expressing that to me, but it makes all the difference in the world. I can immediately go from being all in my insecurities to all in the acceptance and warmth of long-time friends. It might not seem like much, but it is.

    Friendships Matter Much More than the Value We Place on Them

    It’s worth considering your friends and recognizing that we need all kinds of friends. We need loose connections, and we need tight connections. We need long-term friends, and we need friends for a season of our lives.

    In short, we need each other. I’m afraid this has gotten lost in our culture and priorities, and I consider myself as guilty as anyone.

    I also know that being guilty of not prioritizing friendships has hurt me. It’s likely hurting you. It is hurting all of society. It’s time we started valuing close friendships again.
