A Little Bit of Beauty

As many of you know, my professional life can be pretty crazy sometimes. The travel results in a lot of extra stress, and time spent alone in strange places, and I won’t even pretend that is a great thing for my mental health.
So it’s important to make sure I find small things to balance myself, whether it be enjoying a good meal, catching up with old friends via social media or occasionally just seeking out a lovely experience, like the one below.

So if you’re feeling especially stressed, just play this on a loop, ok? 😉

Earlier this week, I gave away all my roller-hockey equipment. When I first started coming off medication and learning how to make healthy decisions, I started playing rec-league hockey just for me. It was one of the first things I did simply because I enjoyed it, not because it was going to impress someone, or…

  • Off to the Coast

The wife and I are spending a couple of days celebrating Thanksgiving at the Oregon Coast. More importantly, though, is to understand what we say to each other because, as someone who was abused as a child and dealt with severe depression for years, I know what it’s like when people around you see you as less-than. I know what it feels like to feel that way internally, and that is part of the abuse and depression, but it was also part of society that told me that. The part that got uncomfortable any time I was around, or who gets on podcasts and blogs to talk about the damaged goods that abuse survivors are, or mocks “crazy people.” The solution to that is not to find another group that you consider to be beneath you; it’s to see the value in every life. To recognize the humanity in all of us and make political decisions that lift the humanity in all of us.

Quick Thought Number 6 – The Perfect is the Enemy of Showing Up

Oftentimes, I suspect that many of us, when confronted with the reality that someone we care about, friends, family members, etc., are dealing with depression or another mental health issue, find ourselves afraid of not knowing what to say to them. As if anything but the perfect friend with the perfect words to support them…

  • Ego Boost

Someone I know who works for OSU was checking out a few of the pictures I had sent her that I had taken around the campus, and they were popular enough that the folks working on a reunion website asked if they could use a couple of them. Granted, the fact that I would let…
