A Little Bit of Beauty

As many of you know, my professional life can be pretty crazy sometimes. The travel results in a lot of extra stress, and time spent alone in strange places, and I won’t even pretend that is a great thing for my mental health.
So it’s important to make sure I find small things to balance myself, whether it be enjoying a good meal, catching up with old friends via social media or occasionally just seeking out a lovely experience, like the one below.

So if you’re feeling especially stressed, just play this on a loop, ok? 😉

  • How Much Blame Should We Really Get for not Picking up on Grooming?

Think about it. Right now, this very second, you are reading this post because either you found the headline intriguing and clicked, or someone shared it with you and said you should read it, and you clicked. In both cases, you were persuaded by another person to do something. If you saw it on Facebook or other social media platform, there’s a Facebook algorithm watching you and trying to give you more stuff you like, to persuade you to keep coming back to Facebook, and you’re reading it on a device that you were persuaded to purchase by some other factor in your life.

Not to mention the fact that parents, teachers, or someone, somewhere, persuaded you to learn to read. You were persuaded, even manipulated, to go to school, study, become the sort of person who could get a well-enough paying job to own a piece of technology and pay for an internet connection, and all of that wound up with you, right here, right now.

You were “groomed” to do what you are doing right now. And yet, so many want to look at children, and make them responsible for knowing which persuasion is good for them and which isn’t.

  • It’s Been a Rough Week So I’m Reminding Myself of These Things

Even when there are things in the world I cannot change, I use my own words to remind myself that there are things I CAN do. I can look after the people around me. I can add my voice to support mental health, survivors, and marginalized groups. I can find small ways to contribute to making the world a better place while also encouraging others to do the same.

    Not Fooling

So it’s April 1st. But for me, especially this year, it’s no time for pranks. 😉 April 1 was the day of my first date with the woman who would become my wife, in 2000, so it’s always been a day of great beginnings. This year, April 1 is the day I arrived in Greenville,…

  • Why SEL Should Not Be Controversial

While I’m not an expert by any means, I look at it similarly to how I look at mental health in the workplace. You simply aren’t going to get the best results from people until you recognize that they are people first, and employees (or students) second. That means that they cannot perform their best when they are also dealing with various life situations and struggles that have nothing to do with the immediate work at hand, and we would get better results if we made efforts to support the whole person and not just the robot that is there to do work.

SEL is that for schools. It recognizes that kids come to school with a variety of issues that would hinder their ability to be successful in school, and makes an effort to support them in those struggles so that they can be more successful not only with school work but with the interactions they have with teachers and other students.

But, this acronym has gotten mixed in with all the other things that some parents are upset about and they are demanding that schools stick to teaching math, science, and reading instead. Let me try and point out why this is a mistake.

  • Personal Update

Those of you who follow along on the tech blog know that I was anticipating a long, stressful couple of days this week because of our annual meeting at work. I was looking forward to that being over and done with Weds. night and relaxing. However, that did not turn out to be the case,…
