Guardian Article on Rape in the US Military

Last night UK newspaper The Guardian filed an article about Rape and Abuse in the US Military, including two survivors talking in the newspaper’s online-only filmed video reports. 25 women and three men are suing the US Army in a lawsuit, which seems to be the general way to bring about change whenever the abuse takes place in an enclosed or institutional environment like the Military.

The main article is here and the video report links are in the grey column at the centre-right of the page.

  • The Truth About Trafficking From A 20-year Veteran of the Child Exploitation Task Force

I think she’s right about that last point. I’ve written many times about the stories I hear, over and over again, where people don’t want to hear about child abuse and sexual abuse. It’s too sad and dirty. It isn’t very pleasant. People don’t want to know about how much sex trafficking goes on right around us every day and the hard work we could do to solve the problem. They’d rather believe conspiracy theories and look to their “heroes,” who are nothing but con artists, to fix it for them by going on rescue missions or attacking the “elites” who are supposedly controlling all sex trafficking around the world. That seems simpler than solving the problems that make kids vulnerable to trafficking: poverty, abuse, racism, a lack of support for kids transitioning out of foster care, or LGBTQ kids whom their own families do not accept.

Those are real problems that create vulnerable kids who go on to become real victims. Fixing them will require hard work and resources from all of us.

  • Why Advocates Should Think Twice About Laws They Support

Law enforcement officials don’t just want to be able to scan for CSAM. That’s the excuse to get the public to buy into mass surveillance. “It’s for the kids” is disingenuous. It’s not for the kids to them, it’s to open the door to the police, and anyone with some skill, to watch ALL of our communication and use it in any way they see fit.

Yes, that will include that cop who’s a little too friendly with the teens in the neighborhood, the one abusing his wife, or the one stalking an ex. It’ll also include officials with political leanings spying on opponents, dictators with unfettered access to all communication coming and going to their citizens, and hackers getting access to blackmail material.

All of it. Out there for anyone with the keys to see, store, and use as they see fit.
