German Brother And Sister lose Human Rights Court Challenge

It’s a familar refrain in the UK that the European Court of Human Rights interferes in the law of sovreign countries.

Therefore it was refreshing to read last week that the Court upheld the right of a sovereign country to retain the ban on incest. In a less objective mood you’d have to wonder why this German thought he could get away with having multiple children with his sister let alone starting the relationship in the first place. Three of the four children have been removed and the main annoyance to the story is (for once) not the European Court but the short sentence for the man and lack of real punishment for his sister from their own national courts.

The BBC has the general story here.
