Robin Williams Dies in Apparent Suicide
It’s not official, of course, that his death was a suicide, but we do know that he was suffering from depression, addiction, and perhaps some other mental health issues. Unfortunately the death of Robin Williams serves as yet another painful reminder that mental health issues affect everyone, no matter how famous, successful, or funny. If…

Sharing – What Not to Do: Seven Things to Keep in Mind When Helping Someone with a Mental Health Challenge
I think the entire list of seven things provided by Mental Health First Aid below, is good, but this one, in particular, is something I think we all need to keep in mind:
“Do not be hostile or sarcastic when the person attempts to be responsive, but instead accept their responses as the best the person has to offer at that time.”
I think it’s fair to say that right now, most of us are dealing with some challenges. If ever there was a time to accept that replying to your text, or responding to a question you have might not be the foremost thing on someone’s mind, it’s now.
Between dealing with kids going back to school, and whatever that looks like, protests and violence, constant pandemic concerns around illness or loss of loved ones, and massive employment insecurity, there’s a lot going on that we are all trying to deal with as best as we can. I’d argue that we are all dealing with some pretty huge mental health challenges right now, so if you have people trying to stay in contact with you, to check in, or support you, give them a little grace. The fact that they are even trying right now should say a lot, and I hope we can all appreciate the imperfect efforts anyone puts in.
BBC Radio 1 DJ Travis gets Retrial while Soap Star Cleared of Historical CSA
Also by the end of February 2014, BBC National Radio 1 DJ Dave Lee Travis was cleared of 12 out of 14 counts of indecent assault with the jury deadlocked over the final two counts. He then found out that the remaining two counts are to be the focus of a retrial. The BBC Story…

Sharing – Prison is no place for people with mental illnesses. I know because I was in one
There is a direct link between the growing prison population and the lack of mental health resources. The only difference is that we can scare people into paying to build more prisons and keep “dangerous people” away from us. It’s much harder to convince people to invest in prevention through mental health treatment, even if that would be much more effective in protecting everyone.
Caretaker gets 12 years for slandering boss using child abuse images
In a real-life plot with tenuous links to the CSI NY Episode “Rush To Judgement”, Neil Weiner, a caretaker working at an East London school, was convicted last month and sentenced to 12 years in prison today after framing his boss by hacking his laptop to plant child porn on the hard drive. Following the…

Sharing – What American Mental Health Care Is Missing
We actually know the things that can offer hope, we just don’t have a system that can deliver them. Our system is broken, the medical community can offer medicine and some limited treatment options but the day-to-day support and the work to reach a state of something more than symptom reduction doesn’t actually exist for most people.
This has to change. Go read more of what he has to say, I think for many of you it will seem familiar, but maybe provide some hope that we are not alone in seeing it.
Now if we can just find enough of us to care enough to fix it. We should all want to, mental health issues will happen to someone we all know and care about, eventually. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to offer a system that does not involve homelessness and prison time for far too many?
