In times like this, it’s important to take advantage of the opportunity that just stopped us in our tracks. It may not seem like an opportunity; probably more like a road block, but it is a chance to add another tool to our survivor tool belt.

We tend to have these odd expectations about what our Christmas Day should look like. Anything less than the Instagram-worthy family photo with matching PJs and the large dinner surrounded by a loving family is considered an unhappy holiday when this picture of a holiday isn’t possible or desired for so many of us.
As many of you know, we got hit by a hurricane in our area of the world last week. We were lucky compared to many, but things have not been normal, by any stretch. Lack of power, gas shortages, and curfews don’t leave a lot of room for “typical” self-care routines. It’s hard to have a spa day when all the spas are closed, after all. Self-care in that kind of situation might look more like cleaning up the storm debris, or getting sleep when you could.
Remember, self-care is not one type of thing, as Melanie says acts of self-care are acts that help you feel better and less anxious, even if they don’t always look the same!
Similar to Clint, when I wrote about not being OK a few weeks back, I also got quite a few private messages from friends and professional contacts who are silently also not OK. But they weren’t ready to talk about it publicly and I understand that. We’ve made it entirely too difficult for most people to talk about it publicly, because we immediately start to treat someone differently when we learn that they are now, or have in the past, been dealing with mental health issues. Unfortunately, that reaction that many have to hearing someone talk about it, is because we are so uncomfortable and unfamiliar with the idea of someone talking about it. And, so the circle just keeps repeating.
