Link – Why We Should Treat Mental Health Like Physical Health

Because when you tell someone you’re injured, or sick, the first thought isn’t about whether you are dangerous or not.

“We’ve made gains in our understanding of mental illness over the past few decades. We’ve also made huge strides in treating mental illness with therapy, medication, and other supportive services.

But, according to a report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, most people still believe that individuals with mental illness are dangerous and unpredictable.”

Yes, sometimes someone with a mental health struggle is dangerous, but so are lots of people not dealing with their mental health, and a whole lot of people who are dealing with mental health issues, are not dangerous.

What’s dangerous is stereotyping everyone, which only encourages the people around us to stay silent about their struggles.
