Link – Childhood emotional maltreatment predicts problematic smartphone use among adolescents

We might just have it backwards about social media. It might be that teens who are already struggling with mental health issues, self-esteem issues, etc. are using it more. Not that using it more causes those things.

“Childhood emotional maltreatment has important adverse psychological and emotional impacts on children, and they might try to avoid these problems by spending excessive time on their smartphones,” said study author Kagan Kircaburun of Duzce University.”

Or it could be both. Chicken and the egg, anyone?

Either way, if you’re looking for validation from social media, you’re asking for a problem. That is not where you find a realistic view of the world and your place in it. It could be, but right now, too many people are not using it with that in mind. That much we do know for sure.
