Sharing – How to Engage in Mindful Social Media During Challenging Times

In a bit of a followup to my own post earlier this week, I found this comment of James’s from the article below interesting, and insightful:

“So when we look at the news and social media or listen to our conversations, we need to observe carefully, not just the content we are taking in, but our own inner thoughts and feelings. We need to notice our own assuming and judging. This is the starting place for cultivating a new choice on how we respond, if we really need to respond at all. For there is a healing power in taking time, not engaging, being quiet, finding calm.”

Social media isn’t designed for thoughtfulness and calm. It’s easy to emotionally respond to anything online, and when we do, it’s easy to find ourselves being less than careful about our words. We say things that are not helpful, not loving as James talks about in the article below, and that, in turn, leads to more bad words in response, and on and on we go. In all the years I’ve been online, one of the things I have never regretted is staying silent. I know that in our modern, activist world, staying silent is “condoning” whatever it may be, but I also find that speaking when I don’t really have anything helpful to say, purely based on emotion, never leads to anything useful either.

Perhaps the famous quote we should be thinking about when we are outraged, or want to respond emotionally online is the old, mysterious quote:

Better to Remain Silent and Be Thought a Fool than to Speak and Remove All Doubt

More importantly, better to think about how our social media feeds may be affecting our perceptions of the world, and other people. Other human beings.

    It is only part of the picture, though. In all seriousness, how would the 6-8 therapist sessions a good insurance plan covers help someone escaping domestic abuse or trying to feed a family on a minimum wage job? How is the teenager being abused at home, bullied at school, and overwhelmed by the bleakness of what the world might look like when they are an adult supposed to find hope in one crisis text line conversation?

    How will we provide hope and connection to people without first understanding their world and how they navigate it every day?

    Look, if you work at a non-profit, you do so for a reason, and that reason is usually tied to the work that the organization does. It’s something you believe in, feel passionate about, and in most cases agree to work for a lower salary to be part of. It’s a massive part of your identity.

    Double all of that when the organization works on behalf of kids.

    So imagine, if you will, a scenario where you have so much of your own identity tied into the good work done by you and your coworkers, and someone comes along and claims that actually, there are kids being harmed in that environment, not helped at all.

    Are we all so sure we wouldn’t at least hesitate and consider for just a moment, that we’d be better off ignoring that and continuing the “good work” on behalf of kids?

    I can believe that happens. I can understand how it happens. I can understand how crushing it would be to have something you believed in that strongly, and have part of your team be accused of something so heinous.

    But we have to fight that, and make sure that the work we think we are doing on behalf of children, is the whole truth of what is going on in the organization. We cannot afford to lose ourselves, and our better judgment, to our passion for the work. We have to stay level-headed and aware.

    Those kids deserve that, and the good work you want your organization to continue doing, requires it.
