Unspoken in her article but implied by the risk associated with loneliness, we’d also do well to create more community. What I think takes many of these risk factors from challenging to overwhelming is when we are left to deal with them alone. We might see these trends reverse when we have the proper support and mental health resources, but we’re not there yet. Too many people are alone.
Sharing – Who Gets to Be Mentally Ill?
So, someone like me, a middle-aged, professional, white male, can talk about struggling and get encouragement, pointed to good resources that are affordable for me, and there’s hope that I’ll get better. Someone living near poverty will say the same thing, and we start looking at whether they should have their kids removed from the home or how we can keep them away from a “safe” society.
It gets worse if they are not white and/or have a more serious mental health issue.
That’s not right. Everyone deserves quality mental health care. We shouldn’t divide who gets the care and who doesn’t based on what kind of mental health issue they have or who they are. That’s no way to solve this issue.

It’s easy to think of self-care as something fun or relaxing that we take the time to do, just for ourselves. But, living a healthy life is so much more than that. Yes, we need the activities that fill our cups so that we have the energy to give in other areas of our lives. But, true self-care is also about doing the things that are hard, because they are better for us.
Sharing – Rest is a Right, Not a Reward
Look, the empty cup analogy is a good one for people who feel the need to put aside their own care to take care of others, but the truth of the matter is that is only part of the equation. We need rest, we need food, and we need self-care because we need those things. There doesn’t need to be another reason, and we sure don’t need to “earn” them.
