Sharing – Hopelab Report Finds Online Communities a Lifeline to Rural Youth

It’s research like this that makes the idea of banning teens from social media dangerous.

A new Hopelab report finds online support is vital to the mental health of rural youth, who prefer social media to in-person conversations.

For many kids, it’s where their community lives. Rural kids don’t have physical access to others, especially kids in rural areas who don’t fit the “norm” for their area. These kids rely on online connections. Without them, they will be subject to more of the adverse effects of loneliness on their mental health.

The same thing is true of adults, and this is why the lack of places where we can talk about difficult things without someone threatening to “ban” sites is also dangerous. We are cutting off the community that so many people desperately need.

There are valid concerns about social media use. The answer, however, has to include an acknowledgement that teens need a place to connect, and they no longer live in a world where there are third places for them to gather and connect. Banning them from screens is subjecting them to a lonelier existence than they already have.
