Sharing – Half a million Australians lack access to needed mental health services
When we talk about needing more than awareness to combat mental health issues, this is what we are talking about:
The commission called for an “immediate fix” for about 500,000 Australians with severe or moderate mental illness who are currently excluded from specialist care because their conditions do not qualify for support under the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
If we did similar studies across most countries, I have no doubt we’d see the same thing. A large number of people lack access to the mental healthcare that they need. We are losing thousands of people to the lack of mental healthcare. Where are the resources that would help keep people alive? We can encourage people to reach out and seek help, but when the help isn’t there, what are they going to do?
As I’ve said many times, I want to teach people that it’s ok to reach out, which means that I also need to advocate for the resources to be available when someone does!
