No, it isn’t fair that we have to have books to teach children how to protect themselves, but it’s reality. I don’t want small children to have to learn about the possibility of being abused, but leaving them uneducated and more vulnerable is not an option.
Oh, the other thing I appreciate about this book? It is focused on the danger from people the child already knows. Our “stranger danger” approach to child abuse has been terribly lacking for decades. I’m glad to see someone taking that on.
One of the easiest ways to dismiss a survivor is to openly wonder “why it took so long to come forward”, without any understanding that coming forward is the exception, not the norm. Many, many victims never come forward at all, and most who do come forward do so well after the fact. That’s normal, not immediately rushing to tell someone.
Emotional neglect happens, and the damage it causes can be similar to being abused, in that a child will fail to develop a sense of themselves and their place in the world. As they become adults, they do not have to tools to conduct themselves in the adult world without a great amount of difficulty….
