Last year, my wife and I decided our mantra would be “buy the ticket, go to the show” as often as possible. This year, we saw our first show last week and have been busy making plans for more, traveling in some cases and simply driving to New Orleans after work in others. I know it helped me get through 2024. I don’t know that it will solve everything 2025 brings us, but I know it will be a positive event for us and that the effects covered in the article below are accurate.
In my own experience, at my worst, I was alone. I made people uncomfortable because they didn’t know what to say or how to fix me. The truth was I didn’t need them to fix me. I needed them to treat me like they did before. They needed to talk to me about the ball game or the latest music they were listening to and stay connected to me somehow. I couldn’t speak to them about what I was going through, and I didn’t have the words to convey the pain I was in, but it would have done so much good to have someone remind me that I was still me, in the midst of all that.
For every headline or expert who touts the “cure” to depression, anxiety, or other issues, there are always a large number of individuals who weren’t helped by it. In this study, we also have to recognize that social media accounts focused on fitness might be making things worse for people, causing them to obsess over their appearance and creating unhealthy relationships with food.
Turns out that doing things we like is good for our mental health, so it’s not selfish to make time for them.
