Wow

I hadn’t been on-line much this weekend, so when I saw there were 9 comments, 7 new, on that last post I thought for sure I had gotten hit by a comment spammer. Much to my surprise, though, that was not the case, there was a whole little conversation taking place in the comments and some really good ideas and thoughts were flowing, all without my even being around. I am truly awed by the community that has started to pop up around this, and others, blogs. Thank you for contributing to it!

BTW, last month was the first month in the history of this site that the traffic levels were higher than my tech site. Now, to be fair, there are far more people reading that site in RSS readers than this one, and they don’t show up in the page views or anything, so it’s not exactly an apples to apples comparison, but it does show me how much this site is growing, and it also shows me that folks are coming here, reading through the back posts and leaving comments at a much higher rate than ever before. That makes me very happy!

Now if I could just find time to make more of my own contributions in order to justify the increaed attention! 😉

Yes, You Do Know Victims of Sexual Abuse

From a highly recommended article on Slate, How what happened in State College forced me to confront my own abuse. Several of my friends, for example, were shocked when Rick Reilly reported that, according to a 1998 study on child sexual abuse by Boston University Medical School, one in six boys in America will be…

  • In the news

I haven’t been posting here much, I know. But I have been linking to some news stories and such over in the forums, so feel free to check that out and add your two cents! One thing I will say, boundaries are good things. Everyone should learn to have them and enforce them. It’s your…

  • Social Media is Not What It Promised to Be – a History

You are my online community, and while your numbers might not be as large as the number of followers I had on other platforms, I’m not worried about how this platform will change and become dangerous to any of you. This platform, MY platform, is safe for survivors, for those of you with mental health struggles, and for those of you dealing with illness, oppression, hatred, and discrimination. There are no shareholders to be beholden to, no one tracking you, no ads. There’s nothing here but one guy reminding you all that you are not alone.

  • New Email Newsletter

If you’ve been getting posts here by email, never fear, I haven’t turned that off. You’ll still be getting those, but I have hidden away the signup form for new subscribers. Simply put, the default email subscription tool for WordPress just isn’t doing it for me. All it does is send out posts when they…

  • Cancel Culture Exists Online, It’s Just Not What You’re Expecting

It’s enough to make you just give it all up and walk away.

That, to me, is cancel culture. I know there’s a lot of talk about cancel culture and whether it even exists or not, but frankly, to me, the real canceling that goes on online is when the good, thoughtful and caring, people just walk away instead of being here and having their voices matter. Because they’re tired. They’re tired of the constant outrage, the constant anger directed at them for not doing, and believing, everything random people expect them to. The vitriol directed at them in direct messages, comments, and tweets for simply trying to have a conversation, from all sides. For not supporting conspiracy groups, for not using the correct words, for not advocating for exactly the same things, in exactly then same way. Because if you don’t “agree” with them and show your support, in clear, and often financial, ways, you are the enemy.

Seriously, it gets old. It’s toxic. It’s exhausting. It makes you question why you even bother with this at all. I, for one, don’t need this in my life on a regular basis. No one does. So, instead of having real conversations about real issues, and doing real education, we’re walking away and letting the worst kinds of people win the internet.

I’m tired, but I’m not ready to do that. If 19 years of working to educate people, and let anyone know that they are not alone as a survivor, or as a person dealing with mental health issues, isn’t enough for you, and you can’t understand that all of the things I do online to make this happen I do in my spare time, for free, then you can go somewhere else.

Take all of your fake outrage and fake “facts” with you too.

  • Feeling Better

Thanks for the supportive comments on that last post. After spending the weekend away from work and away from the stresses of searching for a new job, I feel much more in control and much less fearful. The fear and uncertainty will probably creep back, but now I know the best way to handle it…

  1. If you mention an old entry in your recent posts and give a trackback link the old entries will not just sit back archived. I also tracback so that I can personally remember my older entries and go back to read them. I can’t remember half of what I’ve written in my own blog so sometimes the trackback link is for me.

There have been times when a person left a comment on an old entry that ended up helping with a current problem. I’ve found new comments on old entries to be helpful many times.

About your stats…you might notice that there are certain days of the week that you’re lucky to get 15 readers and then other days that seem to explode. For me, Thurs seems to be a busy day and Monday seems to be busy but it’s slim pickens Tues, Wed and Sat.
