Charges Dropped Against Bernie Fine, Former Assistant Basketball Coach

In a fairly quiet note last week, the investigation into accusations by two former Syracuse University ball boys against former assistant coach Bernie Fine was dropped, without any charges being filed. Coming on the heels of the Jerry Sandusky case, this seemingly similar case got lots of national media attention in the US when the accusations were first made, but “after claiming to interviewing 130 witnesses and sorting through 100,000 pages of documents”, authorities could find no evidence to bring charges.

Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports has a write up of the need for more careful consideration by the media, and I’ve also written up more of an opinion piece on my own blog questioning what we can, and should, do about the temptation to falsely accuse someone.  I welcome your suggestions in the comments over there.

Here’s what I want you to consider. As a victim of sexual abuse, who identifies as male, I go in assuming that most of the resources available are going to be targeted to women. Because, in many cases, they are only available for women. So, if your organization doesn’t make it clear that you serve everyone, with clear examples, and promotion, many male victims may not ever reach out to you.
