Responding to sibling sexual abuse: What to do and why
Lots of good information here, especially because, in my experience, I do not think many parents would react this way. It’s too difficult to react emotionally, one way or another, and not do what’s best for all of your children.
Were you sexually abused by a sibling? What kinds of complications did that create within the family dynamic?
I think back to my childhood and the sexual and physical violence I was subjected to. I struggle with anxiety because my brain is always going back to that time – a time when I was not safe! The things my brain learned then weren’t a failure of mental health; they were survival instincts. They were healthy reactions to an unsafe environment. My current challenge is unlearning them now that I am no longer in that unsafe environment. Asking me to do that while I was unsafe would have been dumb. The anxiety was trying to keep me alive.

It’s all well and good to suggest someone take a mental health day, or maybe a spa day to relax and recharge. No one has a solution for doing that when you don’t get paid sick leave, or struggle to find childcare. It’s easy to suggest time in nature to people who live in a high-rise Section 8 building barely scraping by, or suggest that kids should get help when budgets for in-school mental health programs are being cut.
Suggesting it isn’t going to make it possible. We have a massive problem with access to any kind of mental health care. If we don’t figure that out, the rest of this doesn’t make any sense.
