Reviews Elsewhere – Stalking the Bogeyman – London Play

The play is currently running in London until Aug 6, and the Survivors Manchester Organization has a review over on their site.

This hard hitting piece of incredibly crafted drama is based on real life events, centering around the life experiences of David Holthouse, a journalist for the Denver Westwood, whose past comes back to haunt him even more than it already does when Nathan, a childhood ‘friend’, moves too close for comfort and David is forced to face the bogeyman – the person that sexually assaulted and raped him at the age of 7.

  • Sharing – This One Thing Heals Childhood Trauma

This is what matters. Having people around you with the knowledge and willingness to support you. Far too many survivors, youth and adults, have never had that. We’ve failed them as a society that values our own discomfort with the topic over supporting people we claim to care about.

Until we stop doing that and start connecting with anyone who has experienced childhood trauma, we’ll continue to see all of the negative effects writ large.

  • What is the Justice System For, Anyway?

I found myself reading this interview with Dr. Mary Koss recently, and while I’m not 100% sure about the prospect of “Restorative Justice”, as she refers to it, I think that often, when we think about child sexual abuse, we fall into the same misconceptions about the legal system that she refers to when talking more broadly about sexual assault.

Namely, that the legal system is not really designed to assist with the healing of a victim.

  • Sharing – Life-Changing Benefits of Self-Compassion

Child abuse can be all about shame and guilt. Because the entire world wants to believe that things are fair when we grow up, trying to square that belief with what happened to us as children naturally leads us to believe it’s our fault.

You can’t have self-compassion and also believe the abuse you suffered was your fault. We have to get past this idea that the world is fair and we get what we deserve. It’s simply not true. We have to be willing to have the same compassion for ourselves that we would have for another crime victim.

Everyone deserves to have some compassion for others and learn how to have compassion for themselves.
