Link – Using Your Voice for Mental Health

This is absolutely true!

“Whether you choose to reach out to a friend, teacher, counsellor, or online resource, the most important thing is to start the conversation. I learned the hard way that silence not only doesn’t work, it makes things worse. I have a voice, and I am choosing to use it. The most effective way to fight stigma around mental illness is talk about it, and in particular for people with mental illness to share their stories. So I hope you will join me in speaking up.”

Those of us able to, need to share our stories. As long as there is so much silence around the issue, we won’t see the change that is so desperately needed in our societies.

    As I’ve said before, we were too busy simply surviving the abuse to learn the things we were supposed to learn as children, so we often start out behind in various ways.

    Of course, in order to learn those things we need to do the work as an adult, to first unlearn the things we learned, and then learn the things we didn’t learn to start with. This is, perhaps, one of the real tragedies of so many survivors not even telling anyone, let alone starting this work, for decades.

    That’s so many more years of doing the things we need to unlearn, and undoing that is just going to be more difficult the longer this has been true for us. So, what can we do?

    The question is, would someone treating me as a young person have decided I was an introvert and possibly on the autism spectrum, or would they recognize the possible trauma I was experiencing? I’m not a medical expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I know for a fact that we miss the signs of childhood trauma often. I would not mind if we took a second look at some young people with a trauma-informed lens. 

  • Sharing – Just how useful is childhood therapy?

    Unfortunately, whether therapy is effective for your child, or for yourself as an adult, depends on a number of factors. Finding someone you can trust is an obvious one, and sometimes a real struggle. Elsewhere in the article, Melinda talks about the child not currently being in a traumatic situation, notably one interviewee who was seeing a therapist for depression while also being sexually abused at home. She knew she could talk about that, so the therapy was doomed from the start.

    Sometimes I believe we look at mental health treatments like therapy and dismiss them because “it didn’t work” without considering all of the outside factors that can influence whether it works or not.

    The Daily Podcast Takes on Adolescent Mental Health

    I found it interesting because I think the show does a good job of talking to people involved with treating kids and showing what the problem is. Starting with the conversation with a pediatrician, we learn that medical schools don’t effectively train doctors to deal with mental health issues. The risks to children they’ve been taught to deal with are external. These include viruses, broken bones from accidents, stitching cuts, etc. Today, however, the risks to kids have become much more internal. They are harming themselves due to mental health issues at rates we’ve never seen before. Doctors have not been trained to deal with those kinds of risks, and it is made clear that if you’re studying to be a pediatrician, you focus on the external risks because if a kid comes in with an internal risk, you’ll refer them to someone who specializes in mental health.

    Of course, there’s a problem with that.

  • Sharing – How To Support Your Depressed Friend When You’re Depressed Too

    As you know, I’ve been quick to share links and even write about what your depressed friends need, and how to help people struggling with their own mental health. What I’ve come to realize more and more is that I am also struggling, and failing at being a very good friend for many of these same reasons. I’m burned out, I’m tired, I have little mental energy beyond just getting through each workday, and taking care of myself, for reaching out, chatting, or virtually meeting up with people.

    In short, I am experiencing exactly what Annie is talking about. I want to reach out and be supportive to my friends, but I haven’t recognized my own struggles. No, I don’t believe I am depressed in a major way, but I’m definitely suffering from anxiety, stress, and it’s exhausting me.

    That makes it hard to be the supportive one in any relationship, even though I want to be.

    To combat that, I’m going to be reviewing this article a few times, and thinking about how I might still be supportive, and how maybe people in my life be supportive of each other.
