Link – Why Do Adolescents Attempt Suicide?

This study, and this quick breakdown of the results on the AFSP site, shows us that we think we know about adolescent suicide attempts, is way off. It’s not an attempt to “get attention” It’s for the same reasons that adults do it:

“-The strongest motivations for suicide attempts in both adults and adolescents using the IMSA were emotional pain, hopelessness and wanting to get rid of the pain. (i.e., Psychache, Hopelessness, and Escape)”

Pain and hopelessness. Not attention, not weakness, but a constant emotional pain without hope that it will ever get better. So what might help? Connection to other people who can help them see that it can get better maybe? Knowing that others have been where they are and things have gotten better?

Couldn’t hurt.
