Stop Child Rape says
Stop Child Rape says South African President
For the sake of all those children in South Africa, I hope they seriosuly crack down on what has become an epidemic there.
Pin In the big picture, the thing I know that I need to do is to be aware of when I’m in that mode and act accordingly. There can be some great benefits to hypervigilance and there can be some real downsides. If I’m aware of it, I can scan the environment as necessary without ignoring other important, but not dangerous, bits of information, and watch out for my own overreactions. I can consciously use the skill that I learned as a trauma survivor for my own good without it wrecking my day-to-day life or causing more anxiety.
It’s a tricky line to walk, and I’ll be the first to admit I don’t always do it so well.
Pin One of the reasons we made this move to Louisiana was to have the ability to see family on a routine basis, something that was difficult when you live 2500+ miles away. This past weekend, we made the drive up to Alexandria to spend some time with my in-laws, and as is usually the custom,…
As I’m sure you all know, I’m very interested in the idea of leveraging technology when it comes to spreading the word about child abuse, whether that be by getting the facts out in the open, or making sure that survivors know they are not alone. That’s why I have this site. That’s also why…
Pin No, the easiest way to break up those circles, as any kid who threw rocks into the water can tell you, is to throw another rock and create new concentric circles starting from a different location.
In my metaphor about the trauma, I wonder what those other rocks could be. Mental health treatment? Care and support from family and friends? The elimination of stigma attached to trauma?
How about instead of ignoring the circles, we started throwing some more useful rocks and disrupting the cycles of trauma that we see repeated over and over again in those circles?
Man I’m glad it’s Friday. I’ve been working on so many different things this week that I’ve completely lost all track of what day it is, which makes the week seem really, really long! You know, because like Weds night I wasn’t thinking “two more days until the weekend”, I was just getting through Weds…
Pin If you can’t read that, or Twitter starts blocking embeds again – at the mention of a pediatric psychiatric hospital Rep. Cox said “You might want to check that place for grooming”.
Yes, the very mention of providing mental health care for children is met with a suggestion that it is a place for grooming. Because, of course, anyone who encourages kids to talk about their mental health is out to groom them for sexual abuse.
This is a dangerous path that we are on.
