Talking About World Suicide Prevention Day

In between work conference calls today, I had the opportunity to spend my lunch hour talking to Tiffany Werhner and the Moments of Clarity audience about being a survivor and the importance of World Suicide Prevention Day.

I enjoyed having the opportunity to talk a bit about some of the really important issues, especially the lack of resources and more challenging problems that we are facing today. Yes, today is a day to remind people that they can reach out and to check on our family and friends, but it’s also a day to remember that for many, there is no resource to turn to, and they are being left behind in this fight.

And, as always, remember that you can always reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Some links to some of what I mentioned during the show:

AFSP

Meniere’s on the Vertigo  – this is my friend and former roommate Steve, who I mentioned at the very end. He’s currently riding a bike from Denver to Columbus, OH to raise research funds and awareness for Meniere’s Disease. Personally, I’m learning a lot about the physical and mental health impacts from following his journey, I hope you’ll go check it out. He deserved whatever shout-out I could give him.

My t-shirt, if you’re curious, says “Keep Your Head Up”, courtesy of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and this song, which I find so encouraging during these difficult times.

  • It weighs heavy

At least it’s weighing heavy on my mind these last few days. What is? The prospect of explaining the past to someone else in my family. It’s not something that I look forward to doing. As much as it’s very easy for me to write about the things that have happened in my family, it’s…

  • Bad Dream

Bad dream I had a dream last night that I found out my nephew was being molested and I had to tell his parents. What a horrible dream. I was so relieved when I woke up and realized it was just a dream, but at the same time, I feel oddly “spooked” this morning. Ugh!

  • One Small Thing You Can Do to Help Others

I’ve talked often about the small things we can do for each other, that may make a much bigger difference than we know. Things like texting a friend, checking in on them, simply sitting with them when they’re struggling etc. I’ve talked about how these small acts keep people connected, let them know that they are not alone, and allow us to get outside of our own anxiety about everything going on in the world, and take control of one small thing we can do to make a positive difference.

Well, as we start of 2021, here’s something you can do that would help not only me, but potential people in your social circles who are feeling alone right now.

Would you share this website with them?

Recommending Some Podcast Episodes on the Mental Health of Young People

Listen to both episodes. You’ll be challenged to think about youth mental health in a much broader sense. Hopefully, you will also see that these are not easy questions to answer and that existing in the world and planning for a future right now is hard. It’s no wonder that young people are struggling. It’s time we start taking serious steps toward making it less challenging for everyone and quit looking for a silver bullet that’ll fix it.

  • Barret Robbins

I’ve been following the story of Barrett Robbins since he was dismissed by the Raiders before the Super Bowl. It appears that he has a history of depression and Bi-poloar Disorder, and somehow had managed to stop taking his medication. The details of the whole thing are murky, (like the details of anyone’s life when…

  1. A small community, not far from where I live is feeling the pain after a 14 year old girl started school on Tuesday, after being bullied all last year, came home and took her life because the bullying hadn’t stopped!!! How can we stop the bullying? 🙁

  2. I actually missed this Day but will listen to the podcast, hopefully ads have been enabled so the show can get some income. Thankfully World Suicide Prevention Day is worldwide and Samaritans in the UK is the first charity which appears on a Google search sporting a relatively new short-code contact number that’s apparently free to call 24 hours, after more Google searching there is no charge so however many minutes you have on your phone or your amount of mobile credit shouldn’t matter.

    https://www.samaritans.org/ and the number is 116 123
